Getting to Web Summit Lisbon by bike

Getting to conference venues is often stressful – taxi queues, buses, trains or metro cars packed like sardines. In sunny Lisbon you have a great alternative. Getting to Web Summit Lisbon by bike from Downtown or Uptown is easy! In both cases you’ll be at the Altice Arena in 30 minutes – that’s the same as by car or Train/Metro.

Getting to Web Summit Lisbon in the fresh-air and carbon-neutral – what could be better!

Getting to Web Summit Lisbon by Bike

The venue for Web Summit 2017 at the FIO & ALTICE Arena is about 10km north-east of downtown. It’s right beside the River Tagus, which means it’s on the flat all the way from downtown – no hills! The route you’ll want to take varies depending on if you’re close to the river (downtown), or in the business district (uptown).

I’ve also written a comprehensive guide to cycling in Lisbon including tours

The Route

You can get a physical copies of the Lisbon Bike Map at Lisbon Hub, or you can use this really simple online map at CicloviasLX. I’ve also made route plans for you on gpsies, which you can download to your navigation app or device.

From Downtown (Cais do Sodre and Chiado)

The cycleway runs in principle all the way from Belem in the West to Parc das Nacoes in the North. You’ll join it by Cais do Sodre Station. In reality, just get to the River – from here it’s easy, and you can follow the segregated cycleway all the way to the summit venue. Getting to Web Summit Lisbon along the river by bike is a great option!

From Uptown (Marques de Pombal and Saldanha)

If you’re staying in the business district (home to hotels like the Intercontinental, Four Seasons or Sheraton), this is the best route for you. It’s not as pleasant as the River Tagus route and not as flat, but you can follow marked cycleways the whole distance. Getting to Web Summit Lisbon on this route is therefore a viable option.

Where to Hire a Bike if you don’t have your own?

The Gira City Cycle sharing scheme (similar to London, New York etc)  is in the initial roll-out phases. It’s currently limited to the area around the Web Summit venue so can’t really be used to travel into town

There are several good outfits in town you can rent from when getting to Web Summit Lisbon

  • Lisbon Bike Rentals is right by Cais do Sodre, specialising in a mid-upper end range of bikes to hire
  • BikeIberia – the Bikeiberia Lisbon Hub (also by Cais do Sodre) is a long-established operator.
  • Rentriders – located in Uptown near Marques de Pombal and Saldanha

Getting to Web Summit Lisbon by bike is easy – enjoy the event and enjoy Lisbon!
